Please help with UK record of this seviceman

Hi all,
I have a huge ask but i will be so very happy and appreciative for any help on this one.
Im sorry i dont have much information but im hoping the unusual surname may narrow it down.

I can find mist the stuff on my Aussie side WW2 family but im now looking into my girlfreinds pops records. Gee the UK sites are hard to figure out.
Im hoping his full name will help.
Donald James Moate from around Linconshire or the Fenlands area.
There is a bit of interesting storys that he took a little italian pistol from a POW and had it till the 1980's but handed it in under a gun amnisty Grrrrrrrrr!!!!

I see on the death index that there was a James Donald Moate (note arrangement of first names), died in January 2007 in Lincolnshire, who was born 17th November 1923.

He was born in Wisbech district, Cambridgeshire and also married there in 1951 (also listed as James D Moate in both records).
