Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader
House Carles at the Battle of Hastings
Great stuff Jerry! It's very nice having that family connection to these historic events, it becomes very personal then.
Another picture FYI, I think the picture says it all
The Reichswald Battle was fought in terrible conditions as the photos indicate and against very stiff German resistance , both sides realised the importance of the Battle as it would turn the flank of the Siegfreid Line and allow the British to move up to the Rhine , a preliminary for the Rhine Crossing in late March 1945.
This isn't a forgotten Battle but is one whcih hasn't been widely covered by Historians but the combat was as savage as any on the Western Front.
A good book about it Jerry , one of the few , is Battle of the Reichswald by Peter Elstob ( Purnells Battle book series no 16 )
