German staff car with weird tanks on front end?

Article about: Hi Mich, fantastic! Cheers, Ade.

Default German staff car with weird tanks on front end?

A colleague of mine recently went through a set of pictures that he has from his grandpas service with the 35th evac hospital. One picture has a German vehicle (staff car?) with a set of weird looking tanks attached to the front end.

Was this some sort of weapon? A series of extra fuel tanks? Some weird contraption that ran the car on an alternative fuel source when gasoline/ diesel became scarce toward the end of the war?

Any insight on this picture would be greatly appreciated!

    THANKS!

I have a feeling these were used to keep the water in the engine warm, cycling more water through the radiator, and having hot water stored in those two tanks...

Hi Joe, it is a Holzgas generator. Google it

Due to critical fuel shortages, many vehicles on the home front were converted to run on this. Some military vehicles in training establisments were converted too.

    Cheers, Ade.

Thanks guys you are too kind.

Somewhere I have a pic of an Sdkfz 251 fitted with one of these contraptions.

    Cheers, Ade.

Ade is spot on, Holzgas was very important to the German war effort, and kept the civilian economy afloat. In 1943, Albert Speer ordered all vehicles except those in combat use to be converted to Holzgas.

    Regards,

    Carl

p.s. Be great to see that photo of the Sdkfz (if you come across it) Ade.

A couple more images, including one of the Fuhrer, casting his eye over a converted vehicle.
