    Default German Tiger I: Leningrad 1942

    hallo all
    i am not sure to ask this in the forum but for modeling/artistic resons i need some very expert help from our members
    I am triyng to depict a tiger tank of the 502 abt. and specificly a
    Tiger I n.123 of the 502nd.abt. in Leningrad Russia 1942
    the sources i have feature this tank with the folowing;
    1-an overall panzer greycolour scheme
    2-a small logo in the front of the tank of a white mammuth
    3-turret n.123 in an unusual yellow colour with black outlines
    so i am asking the following questions;
    is the overall panzer grey color scheme correct for the time period?
    is the logo correct for the 502nd.abt?
    is the numer colour correct for this tank?
    was this tank in this scheme really part of the 502nd.abt. and involved in one of the first tiger tanks confrontation with the russian enemy in leningrad 1942?
    thanks very much for your help!
    regards
    stefano

    I can only help on the overall colour: that would be "Panzer grey".

    Cheers, Ade.

    Hello Stefano,
    I'm not very specialized in Panzer, but i think i can try to help you out a bit. At the beginning in September 1942, the 502 received only 4 Tiger that were painted Panzer grey, the rest of their tanks being Pz. III. During the winter 1942/43, the Tiger (new ones) were painted white, but some pix show only big white spots over the factory paint. From what i can see on the 502 pix in Leningrad in late 1942, there was no mammuth painted on the front of the Tiger. Same thing concerning the tactical numbers : from the pix, they appear to be large numbers made with white chalk or small black painted ones...if you have a pic of the Tiger you mention, you should post a pic...it would be helpful.
    If you want to depict a 502 Tiger between September 1942 and the first snow of the 1942/43 winter, it would have to be Panzer grey i guess....then white camouflaged during winter...
    Thanks

    Hi Stefanuccio,

    You can find all you'll need at Peter Symonds great site "Precision Panzer".

    Go to the 'Models' section, then 'Eastern Front', Click on 'Initial Panzer Leningrad 1942'. There's photo's of captured tanks from 502 Abt, one is "12...3?". Also a 1/16 scale model that will give you lots more detail to finish your model!!
