Sd. Kfz. 251 Wheels

Article about: Ah...it seems it's "relic-day" day for me... One more question: Can you guys confirm for a fact, that these are "NSU Kettenkrad HK 101 SdKfz 2" wheels? Or maybe another S

nice wheel, with plenty of paint left!

here's a map of the very last major German offensive: Operation Frühlingserwachen ("Spring Awakening") - I marked with red "X" where the 5 wheels were recovered from.

The "X" near (south-west) Budapest is where the 2 wheels were recovered near the town called 'Szászhalombatta' - the"X" south-west from "Lake Balaton" is where the 3 wheels were found.

These 251s were destroyed in this offensive most likely...

and here's a photo from the offensive - the vehicles feature camo paint ("Dunkelgelb" base color with assorted patterns) - incl. the 251:

    Hi Fabe

Thanks for info. on where the wheels were found.

The half track in the picture is a Sd.Kfz.250 Neu and not a 251.

    Regards

Thankfully, no pitting, only surface rust...

    Default 3 Ton Wheel Details

    Hi Fabe

That has cleaned up really good, well done.

Could you by any chance PM me a list of all the rubber detail markings you have found on your wheels, as I am thinking of putting a database together. Will need all the detail listed for one wheel then the next.

    Regards

THX Richard, if you give me some time, I'll make a list... these 2 wheels I'm cleaning (I'm doing this wheel's pair next week - which does have some pitting on one side unfortunately), are both Donlup, I think...

    2 quick questions:

how should I treat the rubber parts? plain 'ol kiwi black shoe-polish?

is there any difference between 250 and 251 wheels hubcaps?

    Default Hub Caps

    Hi Fabe

There is no hurry for the tyre details when you get time will be fine.

As to treating the rubber, personally I would only clean them with soap and water and not put anything on them. If you treat them they lose their originality, but this is just my thoughts on the matter. I do not treat mine with anything.

As too hub caps, yes there is a difference between the 250 and 251. There is also a difference between the 251 and 11 especially the early one's, later in the war they mixed and matched. I have both 251 and 11 in my collection, but no 250.

I have attached some pictures to show the differences of all 3. The one in bare metal is Sd.Kfz.11, the red primer is 251 and the other picture shows the 250, this is the best picture I have of the 250 wheels.

If I can be of further help let me know.

    Best regards

    Richard

    Hi Fabe

The cap in your pictures is for the Sd.Kfz. 250.
