I disagree that it was pretty much finished by 1944, 1944 was when it was at its peak during Operation Tempest. The average estimate of AK members alone in the summer of 1944 is around 400,000, but some estimates say over 600,000. That doesn't include other groups such as NSZ, BcH, AL etc..

As to when it dissolved, In my opinion it did not start dissolving up until late 1948. There was still active Anti-Communist and Anti UPA resistance up until this time. Some of these groups were fighting the Soviets as early as 1943.

    Itakdalej, beat me to it!
I said that it was rather finished by late 1944, Burza proved to a be failure with the Soviets in the East quickly eliminating AK members and Warsaw uprising was a national tragedy that achieved very little.
Following failure of both and establishment of Lublin government, AK understood that its role was now opposition to the new communist Poland and effectively became the opposition.

Sorry Meyle77 I misinterpreted your post.

The AK liberated many small towns and villages during Operation Tempest, although bigger Uprisings and operations such as Ostra Brama, the Lwow Uprising, and Warsaw Uprising started off with Success but ended in betrayal by an ''Allie''.

Speaking of airdrops in the last post, here's an example of AK soldiers wearing battle-dresses.

With its last partisan member "Lalek" killed in 1963.
I think I personally would agree with that!

But were these last valiant anti-communist partisans operating under the remit of the "Polish Underground State" or their own remit by the 1950s -60s?

Is 1963 the consensus amongst Polish historians?

I know a veteran of AK 27pp (Czestochowa Inspectorate), who now lives in Warsaw, that still has his British battledress which arrived on the same RAF flight as the Freston Mission to which he was part of the AK escort troop for the mission after the landing.

"Zapora" , "Uskok" " Jastrzab" , "Zelazny " , "Burta" and many more Underground Commanders would strongly disagree that it was "rather finished by late 1944, Not for them and Not for many that had died until late 1950's.

The large operations of AK ended in late 1944. From then on the underground state was a mixture of various groups with similar goals, but they were not unified as the original ZWZ or AK.
The partisans of 1950's were not a threat to the government and were simply hunted down and eliminated. Their impact was minimal, but it is an important part of Polish history. In reality meaningful Polish underground state ended in late 1944, following actions were an opposition to the Polish government and Soviet occupiers - without much result as we know.

Let's be honest, chances of the Polish underground to achieve free Poland were zero in 1945 - the fate and borders of Poland were decided. Country was occupied by the Russians and had new Lublin government imposed over it. London government was no longer the force it was as it controlled very little assets in Poland proper. I respect the fighters than continued their struggle into 1950s, but their actions never had any real chance of success other than local. The post-war resistance offered by the underground was not much of a threat as the government was able to launch a full scale operation Wisla against UPA and OUN and resettle the Ukrainian population, while dealing with the partisans. It is a sad part of the Polish history, but being realistic there was no hope for free Poland after late 1944.

Right... so how did the "Free Poland" come about in 1989 ???????

The post-War resistance was a very much of a threat to the communist " Government, that is why they had kept many of the CC and former fighters in prison, some of them until early 1970's. Mnay of them had to report monthly to UB, than later SB.
The communist were very afraid of the former fighters, even in 1981 many were interned.

Henryk Pajak had a great quote in his book : "Jastrzab kontra UB" He said: " Bez ofiary zycia kilku tysiecy takich jak oni, powojenna historia Polski bylaby jakze bardziej zawstydzajaca....."
    Attachment 389884
"Without the life sacrifice of few thousand as them, post war Polish history would have been so much more shameful...."
