Auction items .. Good, Bad or Indifferent ?

It is always hard to say on these things without examining the piece in person. The eagle is not of the "standard" stenciled design, but that does not disqualify it, as I have more helmets with non-standard stencils than I do with the most commonly recognized design. I have seen a wide variety in the stenciled eagle designs, and many of those examples are "close" in their design and appearance to the most commonly recognized design, as the one on the EBay helmet is. So I would not dismiss this piece based on the fact that the eagle design is not of the type that everyone is most familiar with.

If I were buying helmets instead of thinning out my collection as I have been doing lately, I would probably give this helmet a serious look.

Gary’s our resident expert on these. But I’ve slowly been able to familiarize myself with them, more so with the Kirkwood wings. Although one can never be sure from auction site pictures alone this one bears the die stamp details I look for in the good ones. The price for this one is staying low just before the end of the auction, so good luck with your bid!

The wing is one of the late production types that ended up filling in the loopholes where there was a number issued but no wing .... till that point.
(This one's from the "infamous" 330 to 500 grouping).
