regarding the name of Stachu as a term of endearment for Stanislaw , a Christmas card sent to a Carpathian Lancer. they were both good friends, both good at football at school. one went into the priesthood , one joined the army. at the time, the sender of the card was a Cardinal. he later went on to achieve greater things. they met again in 1982 forty odd years after saying their goodbyes to each other.
The Cardinal in Krakow in late 1977 was Karol Wojtyła, since Oct. 1978 better known as Pope John Paul II. Isn't his signature?
What does the inscription read?
I can only figure out the last 2 lines:
...
Stach Szmigiero
Italy, Port di Ascoli
16-VII 46
Najmilszemu koledze Stasiowi swą podobiznę ofiarowuje Stach Szmigiero /.../ = To his nicest friend Staś gives Stach a picture of himself (Staś & Stach are different short or diminituve forms od Stanisław)
thanks, so is the photo interested?
