I would say there will be more "climbing" than "walking" given the terrain at Monte Cassino....no wonder it took so long and so many lives to dislodge the German defenders.

    Hi Everyone,

I have already passed the information of the recipient of the Cross Nr 26871 to Merqin, but I thought that I would share it with you all.

    Rank: Szer.

    Surname: KACZMAREK

    Christian Name: Antoni

    Fathers Name: Ignacy

    Date of Birth: 1899

Army Number (also found on his ID Tags): 1899-223-III

    Unit: 6 Kompanii Sanit. 5KDP

Antoni was arrested by the russians on Monday 25th September 1939 in Chelm, he joined the Anders Army at Tockoje on the 2nd September 1941.

Thats all that I could find to pass on to Merqin.

    Best wishes

    Andrzejku

Hello everyone, I've just realised that I've got more on Monte Cassino Cross 7079, which I've had tucked away since March 2008! Not very speedy, sorry. This isn't the complete group by any means, and sadly seems to illustrate how such pieces of someone's life story can be scattered to the four points of the compass. Also, I have no document for the Cross of Merit, nevertheless I'm so pleased to be able to add something useful to this amazing site, best to allMonte Cassino crossMonte Cassino crossMonte Cassino crossMonte Cassino crossMonte Cassino crossMonte Cassino cross

Hi Jacek, it is such a lovely collection isn't it! It would appear that our very own JENKSI has the Monte Cassino cross, please see posts 34, 36 and 37 in this very thread. Its a small world in some ways, so goodness knows what Clare will think when she sees this.
    Best regards, Dragon

Wow, what are the chances of that? Wait, I know the answer: 1 in 50,000! . . . as there were that many crosses produced. Yes, it’s certainly seems like a small world at times. Amazing. Let’s hope this set sees a happy reunion.

    Cheers,
    Tony

    Andrzejku,
You are Monte Cassino Crosses Expert. I have a request.
Are you able to provide information what was the number of Monte Cassino Cross given to Lt. Stefan DOMZAL? He served in supply troops of the 3rd Carpathian Rifles Division (3DSK).
    Thank you in advance.
    Regards
    Rafal
