    Dear Andrzejku,
First of all thank you for your last list. Again, very useful.

Here is an in interesting query. A lady wrote to me about her mother Danuta Mączka who is a recipient of the MMC but she does not know the number. She served in the following unit :

oddział 316 Komp. Transp. PWSK [Pomocniczą Wojskową Służbę Kobiet]
Unit: 316 Transport Company. WAAS [Women's Army Auxiliary Service]

However, she has a letter from the Bureau for Army/Military Affairs from 1980 saying that the Cross has been awarded backdated to 1944. My question is, was she missed off the original MMC distribution for some reason and only later was it discovered that she should have been awarded the cross. Since no number is stated could it be that since the Polish Givernmnet in Exile were no longer in a position to give out actual crosses, was she granted one without a number being assigned? Have you heard of such a case before? I know some crosses were issued as an afterthought in the 1940s, but 1980?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Oh, and he added cheekily, if you are looking at 316 Komp. Transp. Any chance of the number range?

I attach my translation of the Bureau for Army/Military Affairs letter below for your information.

    Best regards, Mark OSTRO

    Hello Mark,

You have unearthed the one section that, I do not have access to, what I do know is that they were awarded during the 1980's by the Government in Exile and I do recall Dr. Suchcitz mentioning it during a converstion I had with him in the late 1990's.

Those where the days when I could travel to London, but unfortunately a stroke and other health problems mean that know days I'am House bound using what resources that I have to hand.

Apologies for being unable to help you any further in this matter

    Best wishes

    Andrzej

Dear Panie Andrzejku, No apology necessary. I am grateful for what you have supplied and continue to supply. Were the ladies of 316 Transport Company, and for that matter the ladies of 317 Transport Company, included in the original 1944 list?

    Hi Mark,

The 316th Transport Company was supposedly excluded from the initial MCC awards and after the war petitioned the exile government for inclusion, which Andzrej’s comments in posts 272 and 274 seem to corroborate. I have not come across any mention of the 317th Transport Company.

I had read somewhere, possibly in the Wronski reference, that it was rumoured that the women of the 316th placed an order for blank unnumbered crosses for awarding to their ranks. This seems to line up with what you wrote about Danuta Mączka’s cross “without a number being assigned”. The question this raises with me is why new crosses needed to be stamped when over 1000 unissued numbered crosses were sitting in the exile government’s vaults at this time.

Please keep us posted with your research.

    Regards,
    Tony

Another great contribution. Thank you. Please allow me to give something back - even though it is a little off topic. I once created a photo-recognition guide as I was tired of consulting various sources to find out which units particular soldiers belonged to. Most guides are based on unit - mine is thematic: beret badges, shoulder badges etc. I spend a lot of my time looking at old photos trying to work these things out. It will give you something to do on a dull wet evening. [By the way these are poor quality samplers - the full scale versions and a a few others are here:

Including 1st Division and the same things in black and white... because the photos are.
