Why were a few crosses handed out without a number?

    Hello Philip,

Many thanks for your post, in answer to your question "They were not", these are post war made replicas.

The Polish Government ordered 50,000 crosses from the manufacturer, out of these only 48,821 where awarded with a few others amounting to less than 10 that were awarded from 48,821 onwards.

There was no need to present a cross un-numbered when they had the excess from those unissued, perhaps if a veteran lost his and he needed a replacement. But the excess has been on the market since the 1970's sold by the Polish Government in Exile to medal dealers like Spink and Son.

When I first visited the Spink's Medal Department in the 1970's and asked to see what Polish Items they had they opened up from what I can remember 5-6 Drawers full of awards and virtually a draw half full of Monte Cassino Crosses.

I know that from time to time there are dealers that tell the tale that this Monte Cassino Cross was issued unnumbered, just to make out that it is rarer than the Numbered Crosses.

I hope that the above answers your question and you are wise to ask first.

    Best wishes

    Andrzej

    Hello Andrzej and Philip,

I used to be of the same opinion that the unnumbered Monte Cassino cross was a myth. Every one I encountered claiming to be genuine was not. But then two things happened. First was the assertion in the Stolarski / Wroński reference that they do exist. Second was actually obtaining one of these unnumbered crosses. The following thread from about three years back goes into detail:

Un-numbered Monte Cassino Cross – Verifying Authenticity

    Cheers,
    Tony

Is there a chart available showing what numbers were given to what Division? It would be good to see what number the cross is and what Division that person fought in.

This information was brought to you courtesy of Andrzej and The Polish Institute and General Sikorski Museum. It was compiled by Dr. Mark Ostrowski. Recent research has established that the initial figures cited above were miscalculated and in fact the last known cross given to a named recipient was 48847. The complete list of named recipients is at the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in File AXII/85/214, Folders 1-19.

    Hello Hordeum,

With regards to your post requesting information on the recipient of the Monte Cassino Cross Numbered : 43326 when awarded the recipients details were as follows:

    Christian Name : Józef

    Date of Birth : 1903
