Hello Everyone,
Whilst doing a little surfing during a bit of down time, I found the following on ebay unfortunately the photographs posted by the seller could not be enlarged.
The group which consists of the British 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, 1939-1945 War Medal with MiD and to finish of the group a Monte Cassino Cross reverse Numbered 41943. The seller attributes this to a "Private Alex Pakas" serving with 5KDP.
This got the old grey cells wondering, so I started off searching, the recipeints list shows that the cross numbered 41943 was awarded to Strzelec (Rifleman) Aleksander Talaj. So then I thought what if he emigrated to North America, but could not find any records, so I decided to look at the Uk and found both Aleksander and his wife Helena had come to the UK after the end of the war and had settled in Leicester. Where Helena died in 1966 and Aleksander died in 1973.
Strz. Aleksander Talaj, born in 1890, Army Number : (also found on His ID Tags) : 1890-4-III, served with the 161 Szpital Wojenny (161st Military Hospital).
I will let you decide on this one from the photographs.
