Rank : Starszy Ułan (Lance Corporal/Cavalry)

Surname : Tarnowiecki

Christian Name : Czesław

Date of Birth : 1923

Army Number : (also found on His ID Tags) : 1923-1-III

Unit : PUK

He was wounded once during the war and received the wound ribbon with 1 Star.

By the end of the war he had been promoted to Podporucznik (2nd Lieutenant) and awarded the KW.

I came across the following today :



Stanisław Guzik photograph dating from 1931, deported in February 1940 from Tarnopolska, he joined Anders Army and fought at Monte Cassino and was awarded the Monte Cassino Cross when a Plutonowy (Lance Sergeant), Born 3rd May 1897, Army Number : 1897-71-III, Unit : 4PAL, 5KDP, Monte Cassino Cross Numbered : 20160, Died in 1990.




1945 Italy General Władysław Anders speaking with Pplk dypl. Władysław Michniewicz, Born 29th April 1901, Army Number : 1901-W/4737, Unit : 2nd Corps Headquarters Staff, Monte Cassino Cross Numbered : 61, also awarded the Virtuti Militari Numbered : 8539. After the end of the war he came to the UK and in 1947 he left Southampton bound for Buenos Aires.

Another Monte Cassino Cross Group that is up for sale on ebay is as follows :












The Group was awarded to Bombadier Franciszek Stanisław Roszkowski, born in 1914, Army Nr : (also found on His ID tags) : 1914-37-III, Monte Cassino Cross Nr : 20472, Unit : 4PAL, 5KDP.

There are 2 Franciszek's born in 1914 listed on the index of soviet repression :

1) Franciszek Roszkowski son of Wojciech born in 1914, during the September 1939 Campaign he was either a Regular or Reservist captured in Lwów on the 22nd September 1939 he joined the Anders Army at Tatiszczewo on the 4th September 1941.

2) Franciszek Roszkowski son of Bolesław, born in 1914 he was captured at Brześć Litewski on the 24th September 1939 he joined the Anders Army at Tockoje on the 2nd September 1941.

After the end of the war he came to the UK and in 1952 he married Pamela G Fielding in Cheltenham, in1967 he was granted British Citizenship whilst living at 2 Naunton Way, Cheltenham. Franciszek died in 1981 in Cheltenham.
