Hello Everyone,
I have just found out that General Brygady Emil Stefan Mentel died in Sacramento, on the 27th February 2019 aged 102, born on the 26th October 1916. He was a Por. (Lieutenant) in the Carpathian Lancers Regiment he fought at Monte Cassino being awarded the Monte Cassino Cross Numbered 38132, service number : 1916-2-III. He was awarded the Virtuti Militari Silver Cross Numbered 10223, along with the Cross of Valour and 2 Bars and the British Military Cross.
Plk Emil Stefan Mentel
After Receiving his promotion to General Brygady from the President of Poland
President Andrzej Duda, promoted Pulkownik (Colonel) Emil Stefan Mentel to General Brygady (General of Brigade) on the 22nd March 2018.
Below is the Recommendation for Rtm. Emil Mentel for the British Military Cross.
“On 16th April 1945, Captain Mentel Commanded No. 1 Squadron, Carpathian lancers, during the fighting for the crossing of the Scuolo. He personally lead his Squadron with outstanding personal bravery and devotion to duty under heavy enemy machine gun, mortar and SP fire. He displayed such initiative and skill that his Squadron forced the enemy to withdraw after they had suffered heavy casualties, including 19 taken prisoner. He immediately lead his Squadron in pursuit and succeeded in crossing the Montanara Canal and forcing the enemy back from the Scuolo Radone. His personal gallantry and excellent leadership was an inspiration to his men and materially contributed to the success achieved on that day and also throughout the fighting for Bologna”.
