    Hello Everyone,

Face of the Recipient of the Monte Cassino Cross. This time Polish Commando:

    Monte Cassino cross

St. strz. Władysław Uchmanowicz, born in 1909, Unit: 1 Samodzielna Kompania "Commando" (Independent Commando Company), MCC Nr: 48479, KIA in Case Nuove on 17.07.1944, buried at Loreto Cemetery

He was born in Kozowa, county Brzeżany in 1909. Before the outbreak of war he left for Argentina, South America. He lived in Argentina but his comrades called him "Brazyliero". He tried there various professions (including boxing and a sailor). Before joining the Polish army he was talking about himself so-called "Gaucho" or cowboy. He was one of the first to join the Polish 1st Independent Commando Company in Great Britain.

From funny anecdotes about st. strz. Władyslaw Uchmanowicz one can cite his... trained eye. During the Independent Commando Company stay in Pescopennataro (Italy) in December 1943 the village was cut off from the world by snowfall and commandos had to carry out food requisition. St. strz. Władyslaw Uchmanowicz requisitioned two shapely hams hidden... in the bra of one of the residents of Pescopennataro. When asked how he noticed the cache, he replied: "You have to keep an eye on the baby and see what she has. This one was yesterday flat as a sapper's shoulder, and today suddenly boobs such that you can sleep on them like on a pillow. It immediately seems to me suspicious".

He was killed in action in Case Nuove on 17th July 1944 and after exhumation he was buried at the Polish Cemetery in Loreto.

Wow! thank you. Was asking on behalf of an online contact. This is the same unit my own father was in - what a coincidence. Thank you again.

His sister aunt Henryka Leśniewska born 1926 was apparently also in the forces but haven't found her anywhere so far (have checked airforce, and 316, 317, 318, 320 Transport companies - my mum was in 316). It would be great if you could also find her unit.

    Hello Elzunia Go,

I have looked through both the Register of Recipients of the Monte Cassino Cross and the Kresy-Siberia Wall of Tribute without finding anything listed for Henryka Leśniewska.

    Best wishes
