Below, after a very long time (4 years!) I have finally managed to find the second of two "propaganda" photo montages produced by BAYER that shows Polish female forced workers happy in their Leverkusen factory provided barrack homes:

    Attachment 577830

Below: The first montage photo of the Forced Labour Camp run by IG Farben-Bayer at Leverkusen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

    Attachment 577835
To whom were those "propaganda" photo montages directed?

Is it to convince other Polish forced workers to acquiesce to their captivity, Poles in occupied Poland so as to recruit them willingly for work in German industry, those in the German populace that might question the appropriateness of using forced labour or other non government agencies such as the Red Cross?

Or is it just another aspect of the twisted Nazi mindset as in 'Arbeit macht frei' at the gates of Auschwitz I, Dachau, Gross-Rosen and other Nazi concentration camps?

The propaganda message was primarily for those back in Poland, to show that living conditions for the conscripted workers in German factory barracks were clean and wholesome, and to demonstrate that IG Farben Bayer was a model employer etc, etc. There were very few voices, if any, against the use of conscripted labour by the German public or corporations. Nazi propaganda bashed out the message that the Germans were the master race and the Jews and Slavs were less than human and just as man exploited beasts of burden for his own ends the Jews and Slavs were similarly beasts of burden to be exploited as the German masters saw fit. But of course this was done humanely as the photo montages clearly show... the Germans were not uncaring masters after-all.

Although the slogan "Arbeit Macht Frei" dates back to 1873 it was also used in 1928 by the Weimar government as a slogan extolling the effects of their policy of large-scale public works programmes to end unemployment - the Nazis use of the slogan at several concentration camps corrupted its original usage and meaning.

A scarce Arbeitskarte for a Polish metal-shop worker at Waggonfabrik Danzig one of 200 who worked in the yards.

Danziger Waggonfabrik AG founded in 1898 by the German steel plant Deutsche Stahlwerke GmbH made railway freight and passenger railcars.
Between 1942-1943 under the German occupation the factory produced trolleybuses using a Henschel chassis and powered by AEG engines. Later in the period 1944-1945 Danziger Waggonfabrik built gunboats for the German Navy and the factory delivered 8 completed gunboats with 90 under construction or in planning. The factory yards also built the Sprengboote, a one-manned motorboat filled with explosives. Between 1942-1945 there were around 200 Polish forced workers at the Waggonfabrik-Lager.

Thanks for discovering this Tony, I shall try and find a copy of the pamphlet for my archive Do you have the title of this pamphlet. From the overall tone of the text the Polish Labor Group reads as a socialist organisation.

I have a copy of the news agency photo that accompanies the text which the pamphleteers caption "Slave drivers on the job" in fact it illustrates a street round-up in Warsaw and the buildings in the background could be the light-horse guard barracks that Witold Pilecki was taken to and beaten up before being transported to Auschwitz.

The pamphlet covers the various method of oppression imposed on the Poles after September 1939, and another hint of the publishers bias is that the contents are devoid of any reference to the Soviet activities in Poland which were equally as oppressive on the native population as that of the Germans. The “Polish Labour Group” behind this publication may have been a veiled propaganda front for the Soviets masquerading in the guise of concerned Poles.

As an aside (and shameless plug), as evidenced by the red stamp, this pamphlet is part of my recently acquired Witkowski grouping being discussed in the Polish Military Mission in Canada thread:
