A couple of the guys in the back row are a bit odd looking. The one near the left has set of antlers and the other one further to the right has got a head like a pineapple.

Ok ha ha but seriously... I believe my dad took this photo. He was in Polish Signals. But while he was awarded the Italy Star, no mention of Italy in his 1952 service record. A hint might be that Tadeusz LISICKI of Polish Intelligence was at the Battle of Monte Cassino. My father said he was there too, and then the caption he wrote says 'they' left Naples 25 April 1945. So I'm trying to discover who's in the photo - what company left on that date on the sea voyage to England. Anyone know where Tadeusz Lisicki was based in Italy? That might help. Later my father was in Polish GHQ and Lisicki signed a slip... Disregarding all pineapples and other distractiions, there must be a reader who can recognise one of these faces...?

Hey winnie welcome to the group. It's really tough trying to place names to faces 70 years after the fact. Might help if we knew your dad's name, was he in the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division or 5th Kresowa infantry Division? What was the signal unit number he belonged to?

There is a LISIECKI Tadeusz - - 1920/12 st. strz. 2. bn. listed at http://www.stankiewicz.e.pl/index.php?kat=42&sub=649 in the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division?

    Chris.....

    Winnie, hi,
If you haven't been in touch with the Sikorski Museum in London already then I would visit or write to them with all the information you have on you father. PISM hold the regimental archives so will most likely have some of the information you are seeking. Good luck with you family research.

    Update:

The troop ship was probably not New Amsterdam as this vessel was in Greenock, Scotland ready to set sail for Sydney, Australia on 22 April 1945 so couldn't have been in Naples on the 25th heading to UK. The New Amsterdam's correct name was S.S. NIEUW AMSTERDAM. Most troop ships from Italy arrived at Liverpool or Southampton.

In the group photo the guy fourth from left seated looks like he could be wearing a Polish para wing (without wreath) on his jacket? In fact several of the others in the photo look as though they are also wearing the para wing slightly tucked under their collars... hard to see for sure, a higher resolution scan might help. Gary J might be able to say if any Polish paras were part of the same group as your father in Naples April 1945? A long shot

If your father was at Cassino he would have been entitled to receive the Monte Cassino Cross, again PISM should be able to help.

    Spadochroniarz = Brindisi.
PS memory probably failing, but I believe there was an airfield / base near Naples as well.

Yes thanks that's what I'll do. I'm just doing some research first so I can write up what I know and get the photos into some order. Hence asking knowledgeable people such as yourselves on this forum.

To answer a previous question about who my father served with...
In the photo I was hoping someone might recognise a face of anyone who served with Tadeusz Lisicki's intelligence or perhaps the II Polish Corps for the following reasons. But I am new to this research, please correct me if necessary.

My father’s service record is vague. From mid August 1943 it reads he was with “the Signals Units of the 1st Polish Armoured Division”… “then with Polish General Headquarters Signals in the UK”.

Tadeusz LISICKI was in Polish Intelligence at Battle of Monte Cassino and I guess my father may have gone there with him. Tadeusz Lisicki was referred to as a leading communications specialist who in 1943 was a communications battalion commander stationed in Stanmore near London ref www.polskieradio.pl/39,Historia?id=161319 My father had involvement at Stanmore too, and his signals slip dated 3 Feb 1944 has Chief of Staff, Battalion Commander Major Lisicki’s initials on the back.

Then Monte Cassino was Jan to May 1944, yes? The photo caption reads – left Naples 25 April 1945. Perhaps the company pictured was the II Polish Corps under command of General Zygmunt Bohusz-Szyszko who I believe later became CO. In April 1944 ref http://www.polandinexile.com/icrb.html they were tasked to take Bologna, Italy and then 23 April stood down. So it could be them leaving on the 25th.

Mostly on the internet Tadeusz Liskiki is only mentioned in reference to the naming of Rejewski's bomba kryptologiczna http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomba_(cryptography). Wikipedia writes that Lisicki knew cryptographers Rejewski and his colleague Henryk Zygalski in wartime Britain but was never associated with the Cipher Bureau.

Early on about 1939 / 1940 he’s referred to as Cpt. Eng. Tadeusz Lisicki Radio Company Commander at Camp Coetquidan (died in 1991 at the level of Brigadier General (translation) http://www.szpzl.rf.pl/htm/artykul_a...iekierski.html .
There's a photo of Lisicki at www.audiovis.nac.gov.pl/obraz/125253/h:438/ My father enlisted in France

Tadeusz Lisicki wrote a book, "Ła̜czność w bitwie o Monte Cassino" 1984 pub: Skiorski Insitute.
This was reprinted in "The Enigma Bulletin" Issue 1 Dec 1990 pages 49,50 entitled
"Polish Radio Intelligence in the Battle of Monte Cassino".
I'll have to look around for a copy or ask the Institue if they have one
    - unless anyone here has a (translated) copy?
