A better view of the back, I can not see how it would hang.
Mirror quite easily is removed from the rubber surround.
Still a mystery

There ya go - I could have sworn it was made from metal - again, should have asked prior to saying anything.
Thanks for the updates.
Cheers
Its definitely a signaling / rescue mirror , private purchase , designed to be kept in plane in case of emergency landing.
Look at the wafers in lens , designed to reflect light . Very early light refracting technology , that would be used in lenses with backlighting construction later on.
Very Cool and Super Rare
Hmm - I tend to think - if I'm reading your post correctly - the wafers you refer to is actually a reflection showing some galv iron sheeting.
Of course, I could be wrong.
It may not even be military. 'Aero' could simply be
a brand name.

Steve.
Damn it Steve, I hate logic at times.....and now you've said this, there is just something niggling me....
Ha , I could be wrong too , lol , my eyes playing tricks on me. Ive seen small signaling mirrors in the past with non flat mirrors and pattern bases , so thats sent me off on that path.
I could have sworn it was metal as well and guessed the size to be around 3" diameter.
So wrong on all points, lol. Thats a shame, thought it was something really cool
I would like to thank everyone for their help to date.
Would still like to see any other examples if possible.
