Here's a really good link to some of the 262's that came back on the 'Reaper' (along with other jet and prop types) that helped form up America's first ever jet fighter squadron. The guy in charge was a Tech officer named Col. Hal Watson. I first read about him years ago in an article in 'Flypast' I think, and there must be a lot more concerning 'Watson's Whizzers' as they were collectively known at the time, out on the web.

big ned-I would believe that the first USAAC fighter sqdn was the 445th using the first US fighter jet (and jet aircraft type) the Bell P59B Aircomet-while not an 'operational' outfit, it used the armed version to familiarize pilots with the handling characteristics of jets.
