Great link, in the first photo they look like the pulse jets from a V1!....

I guess more jet 'assisted' because of the early technology. I could well believe what gunny saw as V1 pulse jets being trialed.
But Frank Whittle and the dudes at Power Jets with their Gloster Meteor got there first!!
