Its not an astrodome off of a Lancaster as they didnt have fittings on them they were installed into a mounting ring on the fuselage.

could the dome perhaps be from an american bomber, such as a B-17 or B-24 which have very similar domes on the nose just in front of the cockpit?

Thats not true. there are two domes on lancasters. one in the nose (wrong shape) the other was located at the rear of the cockpit by the navigators seat, from which he could take bearings. This one looks very similar.

Wellingtons tended to have theirs on the upper section of the fuselage

Hi Jim,

My guess is that the astrodome is off a mobile runway caravan(remember the one on the lid of the Airfix Lanc kit, engine on fire, from the '70s!) My reason for this is that it has only six fixing points, nowhere near enough for an aircraft that will fly at many thousands of feet. Some aircraft astrodomes have dozens of holes, often in two rings, around the lip of the 'dome. This one does not even have a lip, so i'm going with the 'van theory! I've seen a Vickers Warwick (Coastal Command version of the Wellington) astrodome, and it has a lip and 14 fixing holes, if i can find the pic i'll post it.

I've read that these mobile-control-tower 'vehicle domes' originally came from aircraft !

I have a photo of one from 'Somewhere in England' too, but cannot upload
any pics at the moment - I believe it's in a book I have about the
P-51 Fighter called "Mustang At War"...........
