I do not want to rain on your parade here, but this thread should go in its appropriate place, in fact. in the fake cap threads.
There are further flaws with the RZM tag and the rest of the cap which I will not explain in public.
The moderators should put this in the "is it a fake hat thread..."
The righteous indignation about well made fake black SS enlisted caps reflects a real naivete about the collateral damage worked by us and this medium in our wish to do good. In fact, we do not in all cases, and to deny otherwise is an act of odd self delusion.
Since some of us have more or less single handed added more authentic images of black SS Kopfbekleidung than is to be found anywhere else, my record enables me to generalize thus.
Happy hats and who is really surprised?
This little, silly episode warns adherents of the brave new world of on line pictures as the arbiter of all things that such a false belief dooms one to make expensive and needless mistakes. Go find real examples and look at them closely. It makes a huge difference, I can assure you.
Moreover, the outburst as had recently on the ding bat maroon site as concerns a handful of people withholding knowledge as concerns this kind of cap is also a case of thou protest too much by half.
I repeat what I told one of the moderators: Neither I nor anyone else is enjoined to teach fakers or others all of the details of these things or to ride to the rescue of ungrateful, impolite, and likely immature persons who are out of their depth with black SS regalia. Call me an elitist, but also keep the junky and hectoring posts off of this website, too, which are more in keeping with the maroon website where there is only one speed, which is reverse into a brick wall. The profit motive with black market goods will always be at the expense of middle class decorum. It has always been thus, and will remain so.
The seven deadly sins reign here and it bores me to tears.
In this connection, one does well to read carefully all the extracts I found in the RZM circulars about this kind of material. If you do so with some care and effort, you will make many fewer stupid mistakes.
Ben VK has done humanity a huge favor, far in excess of endless pictures of fake hats joined with buckets of righteous indignation in baby language, in the opening of here to fore secret primary sources which lay out in detail the evolution of this regalia, and does so far better than all the colored coffee table books or secondary works from the California publisher.
It also helps a lot if you can feel and smell real hats, which these stupid pictures surely do not enable you to do. I guess if the internet could so create virtual reality with touch and smell, it would have been already done by the real pornographers versus the hat fetishists.
Lurid, over sexed images of "crimped prongs" and wild a$$ fairy stories about die stampings in Munich Feldkirchen in March 1936 cloud the mind and enfeeble judgment.
Certain dealer websites do include fairly detailed images of authentic black caps, but I will leave it to others here to list who those might be, since I do not want to seem as if I endlessly endorse certain vendors.
Where my dear friend FB and I differ is that I am interested to learn where the fakes are coming from. In the grand scheme of all our efforts, it's distasteful I know but being forearmed is one weapon to stay ahead of the fakers. FB has posted countless examples of original black hats, along with pages of information that should, be more than enough to enlighten anyone interested in this area and protect them.
But, alas, it doesn't work because very few people can be bothered to read it. How do I know that? because daily, new posts are entered here and elsewhere along the lines of "hello, is this fake or real?" If I could, I would move this thread to where it belongs as FB suggests but I don't have that power and it irks me every time.
It's not an elitist thing by any means. We all know Pascal means well and realise that this thread was posted in good spirit. I would argue though that much like the cap forum, prehaps the ss forum needs an authentication sub section as well? I don't know really..
Thanks for your fine post and for your generosity in enabling us all to know much more.
My anger and frustration arise chiefly from the laziness of the mind you well describe and the sense of entitlement that suffuses these websites. Also, the over concentration of fake threads associated with much rending of brows is a worn out trope here, a story told by too many fools. Someone can do us all a favor by a compact, easy to use compilation of real images and other material which is much more useful than endless threads on fakes.
The search function also works perfectly well, too, in fact.
Actualy it doesn't, at least never for me but has been highlighted and is being addressed by the site owner.
What disapoints me more than anything is the knee jerk reaction to the recent fake black cap thread on the other forum by people who know as much about the subject as they do about orthodontics but still want to be heard, read, whatever.
I will give this subject no more of my time because there is nothing new to say. I think thats precisely what gets up people noses? this forum has such a combined wealth of knowledge and experience that answering countless real or fake questions becomes so tiring that one doesn't bother responding anymore.
But when you don't want to respond, you get accused of not helping the community enough as happened to me recently!
This is truly a ****ed up hobby.
