It is real, however, it should not have a WH gold wreath on it or cords per the regulations. These were not used to designate a rank but a function, which was simply the platform supervisor who gave the Locomotive driver the "all clear" once everyone was aboard. (The hat was for visibility.) Hence, no chincords necessary. Once they returned to the station, they were to put their regular blue hat back on.
IMHO, either the vet it was obtained from but the insignia on, or someone else after 1945.
