My German language skills are weak, but the Tuchmutze is different from the Dienmutze. I cheated and tried my translator with no success.

I did get a kick out of the translation for donnerwetter.

Tuchmuetze=cloth cap Dienstmuetze= service cap. The error is elsewhere.

Donnerwetter originally comes from a French exclamation, actually. But it is a really good German expression. One does not hear it much anymore.

Surely not. Knowledge is all here in a thousand little pieces. One has only to make the small effort to move the pieces into a whole of some kind. The effort never ends, though. Though some might appear on this site to know more, I for one do not know nearly enough. Nor do I know as much as the internet lions without collections, who nonetheless sat to the right cuff of the head of the German aryan cap makers' association and told the latter how to make caps in 1936, and now by some miracle of telekinesis tells us all about in 2010 on the websites, despite the passage of some seventy four years.
