Regarding the cap that started the thread, looks like a better than average quality early Bundesmarine cap with nice leather chinstrap and edge binding rather than the plastic used in later caps. Nice enough cap in its own right and there are collectors of this early Bundesmarine material. Later caps had only white tops, blue tops were done away with. Early caps like this had the option of blue or white interchangeable tops.

It wasn't just late war original KM caps that could have grey leather sweatbands. Whilst not as common as brown, or even black, it certainly isn't rare on wartime caps.
