Article about: Hello Guys! I bought this cap today. The cocade and the badge shows swiss qualities, but inside it exactly looks like a WWII german cap (visor is light brown and the liner band is leather).

And the English speaker here does well to have a working knowledge of German, and even Austrian German, given how melodic it is. Or even Wiener Dialekt,
or alt Schoenbrunner, as spoken in the officer's mess of the emperor etc.

    story

The Theresian military academy was founded under Maria Theresia on December 14, 1751, with the order, "Make me efficient officers and righteous men," to the first commander, Field Marshal Leopold Joseph of Daun, and is therefore the oldest active military academy devoted to officer training World. It is worth noting that since 1752, with the exception of the occupation, the war and destruction years of the Third Reich have housed the Militärakademie, whereas the Royal Military Academy Woolwich, founded in 1741, was closed in 1939. The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, founded in 1947, continues the tradition of its predecessor academy in an idealistic sense. In Wiener Neustadt, on the other hand, since 1752 almost 100 per cent of 100 nobles and 100 citizens have been accepted every year. The officers of the Austro-Hungarian Army were also trained here until 1918.

The name "Militärakademie" has been applied since the association with the Pflanzschule für Kadetten in 1769. Already in 1771, a regulated study plan was drawn up by the local director, Johann Georg Carl Freiherr von Hannig, and in 1775 the academy regulations sanctioned by Maria Theresia. The training period was then eleven years and was gradually shortened to three years.

The famous Styrian archduke Johann of Austria was 44 years (from 1805 to 1849) super-director of the Theresian military academy.

In the first republic the training was carried out in Enns until 1934 and then again in Wiener Neustadt. A special feature in the period between Austro-Fascism and the Anschluss is the refusal of Generalmajor Rudolf Towarek (1933-1938 commander of the Militärakademie) to surrender the castle of the German military force invaded Austria. He had the guards marched up with bayonets, and refused to allow the defenses to enter the castle for several days. This act had no negative effect on Generalmajor Towarek except for his retirement. He even got permission to continue wearing the Austrian uniform after his retirement.

A war school for the officers' training was set up by Colonel Erwin Rommel, the later general field marshal, immediately after the Anschluss, which he himself initially directed. To the school came also the down-barracks. [1]

Toward the end of the Second World War the castle was almost completely destroyed by bombs, fires and looting. It burned completely in April and May 1945 within almost 14 days. The remaining ruins were reconstructed in their historical form during the reconstruction in the years 1946 to 1959, but the interior was adapted to the temporal requirements. Thus the military academy was able to resume operations in 1958. [2]
Main portal of the Theresian military academy

After the establishment of the Bundeswehr in 1955, the military academy was again accommodated in Enns until 1958, from where it subsequently relocated to the castle of Wiener Neustadt after the damage caused by the Second World War had been repaired.

The flag of the first flag of the military academy is exhibited in the Vienna Military History Museum. It was donated by Maria Theresia just before her death 1780 for the first flag, supposedly she embroidered it personally. Under the banner are two pictures (Gouaches) by Bernhard Albrecht (1758-1822). Albrecht was an instructor of the military academy and also described the pupils in their military and sporting exercises. [3] Thus the pictures show scenes like "practice shooting with mortars" and "balancing exercises of the cadets on the high beam bridge". The leaves were produced between 1785 and 1793. [4]

The current commander is Brigadier Karl Pronhagl. [5]
    functions

The TherMilAk serves several functions: the training for the formation of troops, the training of officers, the training of officer officers, the interdisciplinary training co-operation as well as various representational purposes of the Bundesheeresbundesheer and the city of Wiener Neustadt.
    Military Realgymnasium

The Daunkaserne, located on the site of the castle in Wiener Neustadt, formed or forms the home for the former Bundesrealgymnasium für Berufstätige as well as the military real gymnasium. Between 1959 and 2012, there was the Federal Real Gymnasium for Professional Services (BRGfB). Batches and unofficial activities should enable a further qualification in the service of the Second Educational Path, and thus the possibility to advance to an officer's career. This path of education became obsolete, especially through the introduction of the study qualification examination. The Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium at the Theresian military academy "Militärrealgymnasium" (Military Real Gymnasium) is a military training institution with a boarding school, which has existed since September 1965. It stands in a way in the tradition of the Austrian military school and its cadet institutions. Organizationally, the pupils are part of the school battalion. By 2014, media rumors were worsening the closure of the old educational institution.
    Troop training

In total, 3,576 troops were trained at the Theresian military academy since their reopening in 1959. In the final year of 2003, the first four women completed the training at the military academy positively. Her only female predecessor was Francesca Scanagatta in 1797.

After the Second World War, the training of military officers was by no means restricted to the officer offspring. Since 1997, the academic standards have been followed by the following courses for university students, which are also attended by civilians. During the training, the officers of the officers bear the rank of Sergeant, but are also referred to as "military academicians" or "MAk". After completing the qualification, the squad is sent to the squad as a lieutenant.
    Recording conditions

In order to be admitted to the military academy in Wiener Neustadt, in addition to the university entrance qualification, the successful completion of the preparatory semester (VBS), which takes place in the course of the training program between January and July, is also necessary. During the preparatory semester, the most suitable candidate candidates for the 40 places on the Theresian military academy are selected, by examining, among other things, the skills of leadership and the mental and physical capacity of the professional officers.
    University of Applied Sciences

The three-year intensive study program, which completes with the Bachelor of Science (BA) degree program, serves to impart skills as a troop officer in general. These include, among others, national and international troop contests, as well as international semesters in West Point, Saint-Cyr or the Army's officer school in Dresden.

There are two student connections at the TherMilAk: The Austrian Catholic Academic Association THERESIANA (Academic Theresian) and the Academic Round Table WIKING (Acad. TR! WIKING). Graduates of the Theresian militia academy can also join the graduate association Alt-Neustadt.
    Troop training course

The training course for the troops takes place parallel to the course of studies and serves the teaching of the necessary abilities as train commander, both with basic knowledge of the infantry deployment guidance as well as with expertise in the area of self-chosen weapon breed. These include, among other things, a challenging sporting performance, driving school training, high mountain training and parachute training.

Organizationally, the officers are part of the academy battalion, which divides into the individual years. Of particular importance is the maintenance of the cohesion of the years. They call themselves themselves after memorable battles and exemplary officers, preferably bearers of the military-Maria-Theresien-Order, which are depicted in the vintage badge and thus classify the future officers into a tradition continuum with the Austrian (k.u.k .-) military past.

    officer training

The TherMilAk serves in a separate institute for the training of the officers of the Federal Army below the trained leadership levels of the National Defense Academy. Militia officers are also educated here.
    Multidisciplinary training cooperation

The TherMilAk is the venue for various interdisciplinary training courses in cooperation with police, disaster relief, rescue and the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt.
    representation

The TherMilAk regularly serves as the venue for international equestrian events, with the academy's equestrian train forming an essential basis for the participation of the Federal Army.

Every year in January the ball in the castle forms a central event of the city Wiener Neustadt.

Concerts and cultural events take place in the castle several times a year.

The day of the open door forms for numerous interested in the environment, v.a. School classes, an important event in the calendar.

In addition, Burgherungen are offered by Bundesheer employees.
    tradition

Central elements of the TherMilAk are the elective sayings A.E.I.O.U. And faithful to death !, the Military Maria Theresa Order, as well as the annual withdrawal.
    A E I O U

The coat of arms and seal and / or graduate ring of the academy were created in 1957 on behalf of the academy commander, Obst dhmD engineer Josef Heck, after a competition of the academy members. The design of the coat of arms, selected by a jury, came from the then leader Adolf Polivka, the ring was executed according to the draft of the main man Paul Wimmer. A detailed explanation can be found in the yearbook Alma Mater Theresiana, born 1956, p.64 ff. The insignia A.E.I.O.U. Go to the motto of Frederick III. back.
    Military-Maria-Theresien-Orden

The Military Maria Theresa Order is of central importance for the philosophy of the military officer training of TherMilAk. The leasing criteria that are imposed on him are also linked to initiative, self-employment, and subsequent order tactics. The Order is depicted both in the seal ring, in the Academic Coat of Arms, as well as in the vintage badges of the graduation years. He is referred to him in numerous public events.

In connection with the basic ideas of the Inner Leadership, the Theresian leadership model was designed around the year 2014, under the leadership of the course director Brigadier Karl Pichlkastner, as a guideline for the formation of military officers on the basis of the philosophy of the Military Maria Theresa Order.
    Faithful to the end!

In addition to AEIOU, the motto of the Austrian officers "Faithful to Death!" Is the motto of the Theresian militia academy. It is traditionally engraved on the vintage badge of the graduation years and is complementary to the soldiers 'pledge, which is carried out during the annual resignation of the troops' officers.
    Sampling

As a solemn ending point for the formation of troops, the annual retirement of the troops' officers is the highlight of the year at TherMilAk.

On a Friday, the evening ceremony will take place, the highlights of which will be the transfer of the flag of the academy battalion from the year of the decade to the new Burgherren year, a speech by the Minister of Defense, the Great Austrian Zapfenstreich, and a fireworks paid for the year. The younger years paid their respects to the year of the retirement as an honorary formation in gardead adjustment.

The following day, a Saturday, was always marked by a military parade leading many of the Bundeswehr's vehicles through Wiener Neustadt. For reasons of economy, this 2014 was deleted for the first time. In addition, the Bachelorgrade and the promotion to the lieutenant are awarded. Traditional hitting with self-paid sabers is just as much a part of the ceremonial as the military music concert in the Burghof. With a last ceremony on Maria-Theresien-Platz in front of the castle, including a speech by the Federal President as the highest military servant and the presentation of the incoming troops as well as militia officers against the Federal President, the retirement ends.

Colonel Erwin Rommel, the later Generalfeldmarschall, was commander of a "Kriegsschule" (officer school) in Wiener Neustadt before the Second World War from 10 November 1938 to 22 August 1939. It was housed in the building of the Theresian militia academy, which was dissolved immediately after the occupation of Austria. He also returned to Wiener Neustadt shortly after the Afrikafeldzug.
The later German President, Rudolf Kirchschläger, was a guerilla officer against warfare. As a commander, on April 1, 1945, he led a flag-youngster unit against the Soviet troops. The magazine Profil reported in its issue of April 21, 2005, that 200 cadets were killed and several hundred wounded within a few hours. He suffered a serious leg injury.
In 1962, the historian Friedrich Hausmann was honored with the Academiering in Gold for the establishment of the in-house museum.

The Wikipedia entry errs with the statement "the only training center for Austrian officers," It is the academy of the Austrian army officer corps of the company grade, but there is also the National Defense Academy in Wien/Stiftkaserne, which is the general staff and advanced study locale for the Austrian armed services. Its three year general staff course is world famous, and longer than its Bundeswehr/ Hamburg variant.

You can learn the german language and you will understand the german language spoken in some areas of Germany, but i think it will never going to happen to understand and speak the german language of the austrians. Even the austrians living in the east of austria can understand the austrians living in the western part because there are so many different dialekts. Lets say every federal state of this small country has his own dialekt.
But I think FB you know that already as you are visiting austria for decades enjoying the charme of the old coffehouses in vienna
