I'm still learning, yet I'm dumbfounded; having served in a Defence Force (six being peacetime),I went thru four caps . Perceived correct stains and wear have never allowed me to determine the originality of an item.

We were not talking about "correct staining and wear" here. An original cap could display all sorts of staining and wear. What we are talking about here is that parts of the cap that should tell the same story (for example the staining caused by the metal pin holding the sweatband together which should overlap pretty much perfectly with the staining on the lining below) in fact does not.

I will use a photo from one of my own caps to illustrate - the prongs fastening the chinstrap have stained the sweatband over time, but look how the position of the staining corresponds with the position of the prongs. This is an example of the different parts of the cap telling the same story.

Thanks guys, will have it soon in my own hands, nothing better as a "in hand" examination so will tell you my own thoughts and take better pics of some areas under the sweatband wich the seller did not take for me !

The other members have explained their views and please heed them as SS hats are gone over with a fine toothcomb!! If you are going to collect visors then do everything you can to learn about them.If you can i suggest you try to purchase a book called "THE COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO CLOTH THIRD REICH MILITARY HEADGEAR" by Gary Wilkins. This man has published a book that boogles the mind.He contacted many people in Germany, many museums, companies, and the book is a treasure trove of information concerning one of the biggest problems that all collectors must deal with.REPRO hats, put together hats, upgrades, from Heer to SS,etc.Take time to listen to the others and pickup this book.Carl

And more pics of the cap

IMO an original period W-SS cap, but... Sweatband seems reapplied as already said by Ben, chinstrap and buttons too, not original to the cap.
