Pics are too small to make an opinion. My impression is though that this is a reproduction that's been trashed and aged as a clever attempt to fool.

sorry, I'm with Ben on the repro trashed to look better.......why has the insignia survived so well ?

I'm not totaly sure though, the insignia may be real. Piping has convincing fading..

The green moss that appears on the top of it also bears an uncanny similarity to that on the patio slabs too. Has it been left outside by mistake?

From the pics supplied, in my opinion it is a trashed 1990's era fake with original insignia.

Agreed, original insignia but I can't tell if they're machine stitched to the cap or whether they were once from something else like a fez. Do you have anymore photos? some of the interior would help a lot.
