I was considering adding a nicely worn Waffen SS grey cap to my collection and need assistance in authentication. The cap seems to be a standard EM cap with a nice Overhoff skull and an eagle with matching patina. The material and wear seem consistent with a good cap. My concerns are the interior which are devoid of any markings others than post war "property stamps." I have seen this before in caps that were used by theatrical groups and as movie props, but I don't know if these are legit. I also read on some threads that the absence of the plastic sweat shield may be an indication of obscuring the origins of the cap. All opinions and comments are welcome.

    Regards, Al

There are many nice details which make think this is authentic - first time I see a closeup of how the rattan inlay joins and is fixed by two threads, very revealing, great material, thanks for this! The fabric indicates a later model. Many original caps ended up in the costum departments of theaters and weren't very well treated - this would explain the extra stiches where the sweatband ends join.
The specialists will be able to tell from these pictures alone whether this is authentic, I'd like some pictures from behind the sweatband, as usual. With objects as pricey as these you can't have enough pictures before a purchase, unless you get it for inspection with the right to send it back which is what I would prefer. As always looking forward to the more experienced collectors' opinon.

Thank you for your insight and input. Although I know little about it I thought the closeup of the interior of the piping would be revealing to those who study cap making. I will request photo's of the area behind the sweatband from the dealer. Hopefully that will make things clearer.

That looks like a really beautiful cap, Aldo. To my untrained eyes, it seems very well constructed and in good condition despite the markings and lack of sweat shield. I wish you luck on this one (PS: if only F.B was still around...)

We are still exceptionally lucky to have Chris, however

I agree, nothing beats an in-hand, but Mike D (the dealer) will allow a return if you have any doubts at all.
