Any idea what this is ?

Article about: I have never come across another one like it. Never seen a photo of one before. Something to do with Deutsche Junge

I think it does not mean Deutsches Jungvolk, but rather Deutsche Jugend.

As such existing in Slowakia, Croatia, Rumania, Banat (and Serbia) and Hungary,
    so eastern countries.
I do not know if they used this pattern, but it is possible they had it made in
Austria. When made in some of such mentioned countries, it would possibly
    have had the LZM indication.

Very interesting, Wilhelm! Is there any particular feature that makes you think it is not a Deutsche Jungvolk but rather a "foreign" Deutsche Jugend badge?

No, it is just a hunch and by the use of the type of letters and grammatical. I think the question best is asked at the HJ-forum.

The background shield is reminiscent of Steiermark, Austria...it would be green and white striped.....

Question was posed over on the HJ forum:

Glenn, You are right with the background shield.
Look at a permit where such shield is shown.
So youth from the Steiermark, in a part where possibly no Hitler-Youth was organized!
With that it must be from the Slovenian part.

In district (Gebiet) 30 from the HJ existed a series of Bann-numbers (545 through 566).
The boys there surely will have worn the normal versions Leistungsabzeichen.

Any idea what this is ?

Here was the German HJ organized.

I think Wim and Glenn have nailed it.

By the way: Another reason why the "D.J." on this badge cannot mean "Deutsches Jungvolk" is grammar.

Due to the different grammatical gender of "Jugend" (feminine) and "Jungvolk" (neuter) it's "Leistungen in der Deutschen Jugend", but "Leistungen im Deutschen Jungvolk".

(That's exactly what the inscription on the Leistungsabzeichen of the Deutsches Jungvolk said: "FÜR LEISTUNGEN IM DJ"; see the second photo in post # 9.)
