I often refer to post war helmets dressed up to look like they are from the period as "fakes". Maybe not the best choice of wording...but the meaning is there

I agree regarding the meaning. If something is dressed up/designed to deceive.. it is, as a whole, a forgery, or in simple terms; a fake.
