I believe that the Mutterkreuz was banned post war as it was seen to be a relic of the nazi doctrine of encouraging families to produce pure bred Aryan children for the master race that was to rule for a thousand years.

Post war this was deemed unexceptable as it was a slur on all Germans whatever their beliefs or ethnicity, and as such was banned. This still effects Germans today, who often appear to be embarrased by the sins apparently perpetrated by their parents/grand parents during this time. The Mutterkreuz is therefore taboo.

On a lighter note, the cross was often reffered to by less zealous idealists secretly as "The Order of the Rabbit"!!

I have seen BW ribbon bars with the West Wall ribbon. Has this been accepted for use or were the ribbon bars reproductions? I cannot imagine why the West Wall medal would have been prohibited.

Bob, it is on the list of forbidden awards, I tend to think it is because of its association with the "Org Todt" and therefore seen as a "Party" award...1957 versions were not to my knowledge produced, see attached photograph of a 57er medal bar, an original West Wall medal appears to have been "doctored". Bars encountered IMO not reproductions, but originals, veteran altered/made up ... I have seen Spanish facist Civil War decorations on both 57er frack bars and ribbon bars, forbidden, but I think unofficially tolerated for veteran wear, although not for/on "Official" wear within the Bundeswehr.
    Prost ! Steve.
