You could actually use a WWII helmet rig, a 50s helmet rig or even a Vietnam helmet rig.
As for WWII helmet would be correct because these helmets were used up and through Vietnam.
50s helmet because that is when the cover was made.
Vietnam rig because the USMC covers were used through Vietnam.
So in short any of these combos would be fine.

thanks anton67. i have a m1 with a usmc cover on it with the patch ega on it. that hole rig came toughter cover and helmet. the helmt and liner is ww2 its a nice set up. but with this cover i thought it might be cheaper to get a 50s era helmet and liner.
i have seen images of usmc soilders whearing these covers in veitnam too. also the mosquito net covers. cheers mark.

is it painted over the other color or could it e the base coat showing through. my usmc example has a shell that is a very dark green with a very coarse sand texture. It could have been painted and taken off

I dont know why the black is on there. Looks like some kind of net was on the helmet.

Just as a suggestion, if you wet the cover (dont soak it, just wet it) and then put it on the helmet, it will take the shape of the helmet.

How about a close-up shot of the black substance?

Some sort of dried grease? Looks more reflective than the green paint from the photo.
