in this picture you can see the paint under the dark green to me this looks like the same shade of green they were paint during WW2 pretty much most helmets of this time were just repainted with what ever insignia or markings they had on them have a look here Stock Footage - A man cleaning and repainting helmets of US soldiers piled up on the ground in the European Theater.

i dose make ya sad watching all those lids being resprayed i got one lid not so long ago that was repainted it was originally a USN D-Day lid Fixed bail M-1 helmet, looks to have a gray painted band ?

i did see a possible band of paint hidden under the over paint but didn't know for sure till i got it in hand.
