Ive made two in woods class and they work really well. I just make a wood base with a beam and a rounded out piece of wood for the top and it works perfectly.

Wouldn't paint and clear coat leech out solvents that might accelerate corrosion?
mate, i don't know about stands but i love your medic M1 helmet!!!! i have one too but i'm afraid it is an original shell with modern painted medical crosses!!!
im still not shore if im going to make more of these. but this was a idea.
Get a wooden candlestick holder. Put something soft on top. Get a wood plaque and use it as the bottom. Put a screw up from the bottom of the plaque into the candlestick. Pain it white. Here is what it looks like finished.

I have been using glass heads from pier 1 Imports if it doesn't put any stress on the liner. If it does, I just lay it on the shelf. The glass heads are pretty small so it works with most all the helmets I have.
So i am going ro make shelves for my helmets and thought i would ask for suggestions about designes
I use display cases you can get at IKEA for around $60 each. They hold 4 helmets + one on top.
Here are two side by side.
Also keeps them out of the dust.
