Ok, so 282 on the chart sets it at about august-september 1942. My helmet has swivel bales, which weren't added until october 1943. Why, then, does a 1942-made helmet have swivel bales?

You have to go up to the 1 200 section at the top. The 1 before the numbers at the top is swivel bails.
