Re: Question: WWII M1 Helmet Navy? Marine? Anybody Know?
Blue liner could indicate UN and definately not a WW2 liner... but I'm stumped on photo no. 1- chin strap button thingy
The cover appears to be a 2nd patt USMC and the HBT herringbone weave seems correct (not army) but the pics are poor
The shell I have no problems with

The UN ( United Nations ) paint their helmets light blue.
The liner may be a late 50's type, and it looks like it could be a 'put-together' lid.
Also the cover may or may not be WWII or Korea vintage, but a reproduction
as it's new condition does not match that of the shell itself.........
Ya got in first hehehehe

Thanks Steve but if it is a repo cover it is an old one...the inside has rust stains and the smell is of old fabric I can't really explain the smell but like clothe that have been in grandma's attic for years and she just brought them down.

Re: Question: WWII M1 Helmet Navy? Marine? Anybody Know?
It's not normal for an original USMC helmet liner to have been painted blue like this,
except if it was replaced or reissued a lot later, and if so, the cover - real or not -
was probably added even later than that, or is not original to the shell.
This is why I feel it is a made-up set.
If the guy has quite a lot of helmets and sells them off cheap, he may have
mixed up some of the components from one helmet to another,
on purpose or unknowingly........

Well someone told me that the Navy painted their liners blue. I don't know if that is true or not? I was about sick when I found out he let some paratrooper helmets with the D bales go for 150.00 They had the leather chincups which I think go for around 150 by themselves. Thanks again!
USN painted their helmets in what you call "battleship grey" but this colour varies tremendously and was paint that was on hand aboard ship

Re: Question: WWII M1 Helmet Navy? Marine? Anybody Know?
Thanks for all the help guys...I just dont want to see him get ripped off any more than he already has. I think i will grab some other helmets later this week. I am sure he has mixxed up some of the pieces as he is starting to get confused at times. Just know that you are helping a guy that lost alot during the war including his right leg so that we could collect this stuff. I really appreciate all the help! Devin

There is quite a difference between the two colours.
If you are helping this Vet - it's great to know this. Please remember to thank him
for his service. We cannot, and have not, done enough for the Heros of WWII,
and it's way past due.........
