    What is it about collectors? First they pick up a 1st pattern, then they 'need' the 2nd pattern....

    A 1970 2nd pattern 'high cut' helmet cover with slightly more wear, as others have said, enabling the cover to be pulled tighter on the helmet without needing to cut it:-

    The Type 1 (1969) cover on a WW2 (1944) shell.

    I found that the slightly higher dome on a WW2 shell suits the Type 1 cover better.
