Default Ww2 m1 helmet tape residue cleanup

Hello. I have a ww2 m1 helmet in pretty good condition. It has the original paint but on both sides of the helmet someone used tape to make a stencil to paint on a 3rd infantry division insignia and it left adhesive residue on the helmet. I was wondering if this residue can be removed without damaging the helmets original paint and if so how would I do that

Is the residue a little soft or rock-hard?
Glue usually needs an appropriate solvent but the solvent could put the paint in danger.
    A picture would help.
