Hi chaps, sorry this I know this will be old ground, but can anybody advise me on the WW2 greens used on M1s? Did the shades vary massively?

I have had the helmet below for a while, but have never been sure if the paint is original as it's so dark it's nearly black! - what do you think?

    Thanks as always, Shaun

Looks good to me, it might have been painted black sometime.

The Black was added later and still could be a war time addition. I like the looks and would like to take the chinstrap off your hands.

Thanks for the comments gents. Have you seen war time black painted helmets before? Where might they have been used?

Looks like a nice salty original colour to me, traces of OD and honest wear.

The paint seems to look different in different lights. The cork is well pronounced so doesn't really look over painted. Hmmm...

I found the stamp no last night - appears to be 169A - would this indicate a 42 shell?

I agree. Some of these shells get quite dark with age.
