Did not the bags with two additional exterior pockets (BN?) also contain something else in the smaller exterior pocket? Like a stick of anti-fogging compound or a personal gas protection sheet?

Yes, you are right soap- stick of anti-fogging compound. But gas protection sheet must have own pocket. Unfortunatelly the war beginns and the army was supplied only with 10 percents of this sheets
