This is how " Parteiabzeichen " were shipped , and these were more valuable items to produce at the time .

Nice thread, as far as in the discussion that has come from it. I think it might be bad though for all the people that have spent so much on the Totenkopf's if a hoard was found. Then I might can afford one though! *Hint* *hint* Bob if you have any more laying around

Packaged without prongs, maybe. But it looks almost "vacu-packed",which is a red flag for me. Stewy
I'm curious to see what the skulls contained look like also, but unfortunately I won't find out. To buy one and open it would mean that I couldn't return it as it's been 'dismantled'.
Winkelman, I think you're right with your observation of a stub... so, a broken fake? This is the strangest thing I've encountered in my search for Totenkopfs, definitely a creative attempt at passing off fakes.
Jeff, I don't think a hoard of 100 or so Totenkopfs would be even close to 'flooding the market'- I'm pretty sure it would just about satisfy us lot on the forum! As far as 2nd pattern skulls go, I have just the one in my display picture, I'd like to collect different types if I find them at affordable prices but I'm content with just this one. Especially as it came with it's history.

If they were ever sealed in a package, I would expect the packaging to look like this.
This package looks like Deschler totenkopf shape condom.
Maybe they produced such products- who knows ? (:

Well , I meant just the box they came in would be really interesting to see , wouldn't have to be full ..
Remember that at the time these were just metal badges like any other , priced at 15 Pfennig each . Obviously a bullion WH cap wreath ( nice ! ) was already 19 times more expensive ..
What are they trying to tell us? That when you needed a new skull from one being lost from your hat, you had to get one of these, open it and solder on your own prongs(presumably sent in a separate package for some reason) and affix it to your hat? Rubbish....it sounds like one of those fake high-end wrist watches that cost you thousands of dollars but if you ever open the back of them, you negate the warrantee (right after you notice it has a Chinese 2 dollar movement in it..)
