Wittmann Militaria states that Original Examples are made of Bakelite and the Fakes are made of Metal...
Veterans Organization Piece, btw...Wittmann has this one for sale, priced at $895...
    cheers, Glenn

The Flagtop is made of Bakelite, but the design seems poor and the sides are burrs.

They officially should be made from "Werkstoff", which often
is a material what is noted to be as bakelite. The color was
mentioned to be as ebony! The ring for the letrtering should
be red. Most I have seen in collections did not have a red
    ring!
The reason for its existance is that the old flag-tops from
metal in 1940 were to be collected (Metallspende) for
    the weapon industry!

Here the note from the well-known "Uniformen-Markt"
    from March 15, 1941.

I once had a very early piece and it was made of aluminum. We can not always say never. It was part of a vet grouping I bought many years ago. It was also on the pole with the flag.

An easy mistake... Ever since that McCartney/Wonder song, the two words are linked in everybody's mind.
