What is this German flag with a white border?
I have had this flag for a few years, however, have never seen a similar one with a white border. I would like to say that it was shot up by maraurding Allied troops, but unfortunately it's VERY heavy moth damage!
Given the rope and attachment I guess it is a flag for a flag pole (as opposed to a banner). It has a name 'LOTSE' written on it which I assume is the person who 'liberated' it.
Size would probably help in identifying it but I forgot to measure it when I photographed it and it's now safely packed away!!!! It is approximately 6' x 4' with a 10'' white border.
Does anybody know if the border signifies anything, or is it a standard German flag?

Many thanks Mr Bond for your quick reply. Would it have been flown on a ship/tug/boat or at the habour (I'm not very nautical!)

Depending on size, it might have been on a harbor pilots office, but more likely on the pilots launch or if he has to transfer onto a ship to guide it into harbor, it might be flown on the ship to show he is on board.

LOTSE means Pilot, I think

Dankeschön Herr Hoffmann and Mr Bond for your quick replies. I will have to find a German launch to fly it (although I think it'll disintegrate in anything more than a light breeze!)
