Description: #4837 with a script letter L beneath. Made in 1942, with JWN on reverse. Frog is also made in 1942 by _____ Hessen. Beginnings of rough finishing techniques are evident on this blade, which has very good bluing, with some surface rust on the top strap of the handle. The scabbard is over-painted in black, but it was done in wartime, and was in this condition when I got it in 1975. The only issue is in the frog. Some bone head must have tried taking it off before I got it, for there is a tear above the hole punched for the scabbard lachet, possible from use of a tool to lift the frog over. one could put a touch of leather dye on the torn area, and it would be nearly invisible.
