As hard as it is to beleive, I got called to a job in Basrah and we were escorted in to the city by Warrior and Challenger tanks. The convoy turned left over a bridge and my driver just carried on down a bank into a S**t filled river. Obviously the little convoy light wasn't quite adequate enough for him to see. Funnily enough, a 3 ton Snatch Land Rover dosn't float ad can't reverse up a 45degree slope!

I wonder if those type of off road trips are not a requirement in the military. My driver once lost control of our M113 we went down an enbankment and through a large log fence. We couldn't get out the same way we got in it was too steep to climb and the log fence totally enclosed the field we were in. So we made an exit through another area of log fence. Who ever owned that fence had to of been angry at us. The whole experience made me realize that I should always have extra underwear.

I've located an excellent music selection that seems to run hand in hand with this thread. That tank is in the slides.

Interesting thought, but I don't think there is any way the U.S. Army would leave that tank there. With the barrel, reactive armour, turbine engine, etc. If they can't get it out, they'll finish it off with a few thermite grenades. Our let a predator practice shooting a Hellfire at it.

That tank does not have reactive armor.

the US army finished it of with a misile
Ouch, that hurts seeing my former "office" in that condition. If you notice, every torsion bar on that vehicle has been snapped from the impact of the blast - hence the tank is almost bottomed out. It takes a massive concussion/impact to do that.

I wonder who's fault that was?
I thought the days of leaving stuck AFV's were gone, because now these things cost a hell of a lot of money

    Thanks

I was on exercise in northern Germany in the late 70s when we came across a US tank crew who had lost their tank

In the early 70s i was in Germany with the Army Cadet Force, we were taken out to Saltau trainning area so we could all have a drive of the various tank, and other vehicles, we had great fun driving the APCs Stalwarts and Chieftans , one of our lads was being instructed to drive the thing and i was in the turret beside the sgt commander we were all larking about when the lad driving turned hard right and went down a gully , the only trouble was that the gun barrel was not turned to the rear.We came to a very sudden stop as the barrel embedded itself into the opposite bank and no matter what we tried we couldnt get the thing out as something went wrong with the reverse gearing. We had to be pulled out by a recovery vehicle only to learn later that the barrel was damaged.Very costly for the MOD, and a lot of red faces in the Sergeants mess, but very funny. The next day i had a drive of another one and there was this one old tree that had been there for donkeys yrs and yes you guessed it , i hit and demolished the thing I wasnt very popular that day!!

Reminds me of around this time last year at Barry Buddon, lets just say cadets still get let loose in tanks sometimes, and naturally parts of the training area did get destroyed, especially the grass

    Thanks
