Burtonwood Airfield Find

Hi Guys
I found these on a recent 10 min sweep through the old WW2 Airfield area @ approx 5" depth.

Before i start to unnecessarily clean it all up... any clean examples around? Any ideas?

My thoughts are, 4x4 vehicle oil or water cap! It still has its rubber seal.

Here is what I can read under the hardened dirt:
MADE IN ENGLAND
18
PATENTED IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES

There is more but under the muck.

I was assuming vehicle because its rather heavy duty and has stamping on it?

Hi Dan, not off a vehicle to the very best of my knowledge of hanging around WW2 ex - military vehicles for the past 30 years. Off a fuel drum I think.

What size is it? My first though was fuel drum cap too!

Approx 60mm wide & 15mm thick

Thanks for the help boys, im going to put some weak detergent into the top to try and lift the muck off the rest of the writing

The Black at top of the cap was thick tar/oil that i have been trying to remove with little joy... the missus just recommended "sticky stuff remover" and blow me..... it was incredible... 10 seconds later and it was gone with no effect on the metal TRI SURE!!
