Nice catch and it will make a good toolbox, No worries with the MOD, they wont want it back. you should see what we have buried in the past, you would have a shock whats on dartmoor.
I remember Ballykinlar base, just keep it in the shed it will come in handy. I still have an SLR ammo box for some car tools, and i left in 82,

Ive got a smoke grenade box and a link box in the cellar that I was told to loose by my old QMS way back in the early 80s. You're right, they make great tool boxes

PS: As I am sure you're aware, Catterick and Salisbury Plain TAs are much the same as Dartmoor TA as regards "dumped/lost kit" etc

I'm ex army and can only agree with Panzer 3. Stuff like this gets left all over the training areas throughout the UK. Its all spent rounds and an empty ammo box stuff you can pick up on a military market stall. The MOD would not be worried about wanting this back....probably doing them a favour.

years aggo at the firring points on heath range at lulworth we used to leave a box of empty 7.62 caces by the gate for the kids to have ,so that they would not go picking things up on the range , less danger of them getting blown up by a blind ,
that is the main reason the mod tries to keep people out ,and the odd idiot who tries to remove an old hard target with out permission ,,they are the ones who get prosecuted ,, if you ask thay will escort you and allow you to remove parts from hard targets but you have to ask,i escorted loads of peaple around the ranges , and my only brief was not to let them pic up ordnance and no digging , they usualy can unbolt and take what they like within reason

If this was really the way it was dredged up, with no lid secured or attached
to the can, and only a few rounds in the bottom, I suspect somebody set
it adrift with the rounds as ballast until it was swamped
by a wave and sank.

This has obviously been left on the beach of a military training area or range at somepoint in the past few years and washed out to sea. These are 7.62mm Ball Rounds, as used with the General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) The best thing to do with this item is to throw it back in the sea to avoid trouble with the MOD because its still actually their property even though it was hauled out the sea. Normally to remove this sort of thing from an area thats still covered by the By Laws on MOD property you would be breaking the law, I'm not to sure if this falls under the By Laws, but just to be safe you should get rid of it Its not worth that much either so not really a loss.

Perhaps dropped overboard from an R.N. Boat. R.N. have Gimpy's onboard for A.A. and ship board defence.
I am unaware if Irish Navy use Gimpy, probably do.

For the pedantics out there, all MOD kit technically still belongs to MOD, unless released through disposal / written off. But who could produce a receipt for everything when you buy pallets of equipment(s) at auction. I have, and found ammunition boxes being used to carry radio, vehicle and other goodies. And as the ex- military, even cadets and T.A. bods will know the odd ammo box aint going to get you in the clink.

There are rules about flotsam/jetsam, coastline recovery, 12 mile limit and international water regarding wreck etc.

I also forgot, there is a certain officer in a certain regiment who has blagged a few military vehicles, including a live Gepard. Parked in a shed in the uk area near...
SIB and MOD plod have been informed, but you know the Cavalry...So when it comes to an ammo box dredged up from the sea, i know a good barrister.

Its not an offence to have this box or spent cases in your possession, it is an offence to remove live rounds or empty cases from a range, however who would go to all the trouble of trying to prove where you got it from, as far as your concerned its a market buy, they sell them everywhere, and i dont think being found in the sea constitutes an offence anyway unless its salvage and i wouldnt think this relates in this case, just enjoy the find

I bet it was just one of the many "cadet things" that arent used in the actual Armed Serives. It was a hell of a mouthful :P
