Default Merlin engine - Close up photos

    Hi all

***Can we stick this thread please ****

During a long weekend break in London, my wife, daughter and I visited a number of museums, one of which was the science museum. Sitting in their aviation section was a lovely Merlin engine. Having been convinced that I've found pieces off this iconic engine so many times in the past, yet never being able to ID them due to a lack of photographic close ups on the net, I decided to fill the gap !

Please find attached a picture of every single piece of this marvellous engine.

Hopefully this will help some of you in identifying items that you've dug from airfields. I for one am just about to go and dig through my 'yet to be identified' box of ground dug items to retrieve two items I now know to have belonged to a Merlin engine

The pictures are not in any specific order. Have a trawl through them when ever you need to I wish these were around a few years back.....I'm sure I've chucked stuff that I could now ID as being off a Merlin....... (Stop sniggering WH).

It looks a right pig to work on. How long would an engine change for a Spitfire take?

Lovely engine - the sound of one of these in a spitfire is magic. When I was a kid I used to go and play occasionally on an abandoned airfield not too far from Dunfermline - this would be the late 50's. The buildings were in a mess, stuff lying about everywhere but I liberated an oxygen mark and the complete parts manual for a Lockheed Hudson, down to the last nut and bolt (I sold it many years later for quite a lot IIRC). On my last visit, outside on the runway, some guys were cutting up stuff with torches but there were still three Hudsons sitting on their bellies which, of course, I loved to play in. But what grabbed my interest (and the reason for this post) was a huge stack of brand new Rolls Royce Merlin engines, still in their crates and each one standing in a zinc bath half full of oil dripping from the engine - all, presumably, to be scrapped since they were out there in all weathers and many of the crates were damaged. Even then, at that age, I thought it a shame. Also, in the mess behind the bar, was the biggest pile of empty booze bottles ! Last day, I suppose, so they drank the bar dry. End of trip down memory lane ....

ive worked a lot with metior engines ,,and they are abutiful engine ,,,ie ,, a merlin without the supercharger and a diferent cooling jacket
BUT they just dont have that wonderfull sound , and chils down the neck like the merlin
centurion tank has a sound all of its own and i love it ,, but its nothing to compair to a true merlin
    cheers ian

    oh forgot
    timing the magnetoes
and balancing the carbs is an art in its self
i have i think got the magnetoes right most of the time
along with the starter distibuter and points
but i have allways failed with the carbs
ive never got it right ,, try as i might
o well ive not played with them for the last ten years
im to buisy with lycoming gas turbines on M1A1 for the US army at the moment
    cheers aigain ian

Got to agree with IAN, theres nothing like the sound of a Merlin in a spit, unless its four in a lanc in perfect harmony
