How do these artifacts get so deep in the ground?
How do these artifacts get so deep in the ground?
Hi Peanut.
There are a few explanations for the depth that they are found at, the obvious ones being that they are in the bottom of old shell craters or in the remains of old trench/defensive positions that have collapsed in over time, possibly even backfilled and whatever was at the bottom got covered over.
The area could also have been marshland, boggy etc at the time of "loss" and the stuff has gradually sunk over time, remember, we are talking about a 60> 70 years time span.

Indeed all the trenches are backfilled , i've seen the MG 42 and it's a nice piece of Narva History.

Hi !
Im new on this forum, and found this old thread regarding MG42 of 5./24.
I visited the museum in Sinimae in 2008.
Could the described finding be the MG next to the wall on my photo?
Welcome to the forum , the MG42 from 5 Kompanie positions wasn't recovered until 2010.
regards
Paul

I bet that springs are still working. I had a chance to see burned mg42 with working springs.
